Two communities in the Northern Territory have now received a delivery from Mulga Road Books for their community development as part of our Donations in Kind program. Our Project Director, James Forrester was visiting Darwin for personal reasons and purchased two extra bags of luggage from Qantas (20Kg each) and carried them with him to Darwin.
They were then delivered to:
- Fly Tiwi for transport to Bathurst Island for the Nguiu community
- West Arnhem Shire Council office in Darwin for the Oenpelli community
We look forward to hearing more from them.
Any Indigenous Community that would like to receive a parcel of books for their community development is welcome to contact us. If any member is visiting Sydney they can collect a parcel to suit their needs. We can tailor the books supplied to suit specific community needs, such as:
- Children's Books
- Educational materials
- Small Business projects
- Women's Crafts, cooking etc
- Men's Shed materials
We are continuing to explore other means of delivery rather than the personal delivery used here.

"Donations in KInd" is a strategy Rotary has used over many years in different circumstances. Collecting and shipping used medical equipment such as Xray Machines, Hospital Beds, spectacles, and books to third world countries was part of my early experiences in Rotary.
We are using this strategy to manage the volume of books donated to us by a very generous community, to whom we are grateful. The donation rate currently exceeds the sales from the bookshop and we are using the excess to assist a variety of community groups who can use the books effectively for their own benefit.
We are currently placing books with:
- Indigenous Communities, who wish to obtain books they specify for their own social and economic development
- Men's Shed's in the local community
-
Nursing Homes and Retirement Villages in the local community. The following Nursing Homes have already received donations -
- Blakehurst Cheddar Street
- Fairlea
- Ferndale
- Shangrila
- We are prepared to send books overseas to schools and orphanages in developing countries, if we can solve the logistics problems
- We welcome enquiry from other community groups who would like to receive suitable books for their purposes.
The quality of the books donated is excellent and the surplus to what we can put in the bookshop for sale is marked for redistribution in the storeroom.
Our challenge is not the supply of books, but how to deliver them. Delivery to local community groups is not a problem, but delivering to the remote indigenous communities (or overseas) is a challenge, and we are requesting help from anyone who can assist us. See our request on the Home page for Help, and, if you can assist, please ring (02 8034 6269) or email us This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Indigenous Communities can assist themselves if they can assist us to solve the transport problem. If any member of the community is coming to Sydney for any reason, let us know, and we can provide books for them to take back to you.
